week of January 23

Accounting & Finance students are about to finish a cycle of work for a proprietorship.  We have journalized transactions, posted to the ledger, prepared a worksheet to summarize the fiscal period, and will be completing financial statements and end of period closing entries this week.  They are learning the "language of business" and should have good understanding of terms like assets, liabilities, capital, debits/credits, balance sheet, income statement, etc.

Students have studied money and banking and begun a unit on organizational structures (like proprietorships, partnerships, corporations).  We will begin an extensive unit on accounting vocabulary and concepts this week.

week of Nov 1

Accounting and finance students have just finished an eight month checkbook simulation.  They should be able to write checks, keep up with a register, and reconcile their checkbooks with a high degree of accuracy.  We will continue this week talking about the role of money and completing the EverFi unit on banking.  Organizational structures will be discussed at the end of the week.

Week of Oct 17

Accounting and Finance students have finished up a unit on investing and the stock market.  We started the Everfi financial literacy program and played a simulated game about the stock market.  We will begin a unit on money this week and start a checkbook simulation that will take a couple weeks to finish.  Students will have a thorough understanding of how to write checks, maintain a checkbook register, prepare a bank reconciliation, and make deposits.

Week of Sept. 19

Accounting and finance students will finish discussions about ethical decision making by presenting a possible solution to an ethical dilemna following a model for decision making.  We will spend a couple days watching Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room to try and understand how poor ethical decision making in a company can have devastating effects. Students will complete an open response about the video.

Week of Sept 12

Students have finished creating a resume and cover letter for a potential job that interests them.  We will discuss interviews and thank you notes before entering a unit on ethical decision making.  We will view a video that shows how the huge corporation Enron collapsed due to unethical decision making by the administration.

Week of September 6

We have discussed accounting careers and the importance of resumes and letters of applications.  The powerpoint presentations went very nicely.  This week students will create a resume and write a letter of application about a position in which they have interest.  We will end the week discussing thank you notes and the interview process.
